Dr. William Randolph Lovelace arrived at Fort Sumner, New Mexico in 1912 and later moved to Albuquerque in 1922
joining his brother-in-law in medical practice. That same year, the two founded the Lovelace Clinic based on the
group-practice model. In 1947, Dr. Lovelace's nephew, Dr. William Randolph Lovelace II (Randy), arrived in Albuquerque
and helped establish the Lovelace Medical Foundation launching medical care, education and medical research. Dr. Randy
Lovelace was a leader in the Foundation’s research for aviation medicine. During the 1950’s he played a key role in America’s
entry into space exploration.
Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute
The Foundation now operates as the Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute (LRRI). LRRI is one of the nation’s largest
independent biomedical research organizations and is wholly dedicated to basic science of respiratory health problems.
The Institute's 80 scientists and 330 technicians and support staff work in over 350,000 square feet of laboratory facilities.
Funding is generated through research grants, contracts and philanthropy. In 1991, LRRI sold its shares in the Lovelace Medical
care and insurance plan and has operated independently of Lovelace Health Systems since that time.
